"A" Is For...

Just a quick hit about the Toronto Maple Leafs stripping Tomas Kaberle of his assistant captain's role.

I'm not going to say that Mike Komisarek or Francois Beauchemin are not capable of backing up captain Dion Phaneuf, I just disagree about the optics of the move.

Kaberle is the Leafs' longest-serving member and despite all the attempts to move him and his father's unfortunate comments, Kaberle has not once complained publicly. The Leafs could have, at least, showed as much class and let him play out his final days as a Maple Leaf with the "A" on chest.

It just seems to reek of pettiness when the Leafs should be putting their best foot forward. They've been a shamble for years and, finally, when they seem to be gaining some stability, for the first time since the lockout, they give Kaberle the ol' backhanded glove slap. For what? For wanting to stay with this sad-sack team so long? For being the best of a bad bunch? For signing a reasonable contract that included a no-trade clause?

What kind of a message does this send to the rest of the players? I don't know. But it leaves a bad taste in one fan's mouth.
