Isn't this fun?

Just a quick thought here, but isn't it fun to be debating the relative merit of having Dion Phaneuf become the next captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs?

By the accounts I have read, Phaneuf is vocal and demanding of his teammates. At the same time, the other players on the team are communicating better on the ice and off. Apparently they go to dinner in large groups, rather than the two or three man cliques that used to dine together.

Of the other candidates, Francois Beauchemin or Mike Komisarek might merit some consideration, but neither elevated the team in the manner that Phaneuf has since coming over from the Calgary Flames. Tomas Kaberle is a long-standing Maple Leaf, but I still believe he will be on his way out of town for some forward help this summer. Luke Schenn needs to concentrate on his game. Phil Kessel... he seems content to just score goals, let's not burden him with anything else.

So, that leaves the wild-eyed, loud-talking Phaneuf. I can't wait to see all of the Number 3 jerseys around Ontario next year with the "C" stitched on the chest.

It sure beats the days when some argued that Matt Stajan should be captain, doesn't it?
