How Much Is Too Much?

As a Toronto Maple Leafs' fan, I sometimes have to wonder when I should shut it down?

You know how it is. You try to be as supportive as possible of this rebuilding team, only to be rebuked anytime you get behind the slightest modicum of success.

Look, we're now five years out of the playoffs. We ended up with another hopeless season by December this year. Then, we try to get behind a push to keep the Boston Bruins from claiming one of the top three spots at this spring's NHL Entry Draft.

Then what happens?

Tuesday night happens. When the Leafs have a real shot at moving up a little, they blow it. As unwilling or unable to do the dirty work in front of the net as the coaching staff seems to be on deciding to let Jonas Gustavsson carry the goaltending load for the duration of the season.

I swear, Ron Wilson and his Toronto Maple Leafs will drive all of us fans to be bi-polar before too long. Jean Sebastien Giguere has lost his mojo, deal with it, Ron.

So, how much is too much? Have Leaf fans conceded a top-three pick to the Bruins? Should we shut down for the last nine games and focus on something else?

No. We'll be there until the bitter end. We always are. Plus, we'll convince ourselves that somehow Brian Burke is going to trade Rickard Wallin for a first round pick in this year's draft.

We're Leaf fans. This is what we do.

Besides, my Western team is the only team lower than the Leafs in the league standings.

  1. I'm not so sure that Wilson has changed his mind about having Monster and Jiggy share the load the rest of the way. He said that he wants Jiggy to play the last game of the year in Montreal, and that he'd have to juggle the pattern of alternating starts a bit to make that happen. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what we're seeing. I also don't think they're going to give up on Jiggy too soon; Monster has been very hot the last 7 or 8 games and is playing much better, but he is still an RFA and going in to next season, he's going to still be pretty green for a sophomore because of all his injury problems and the other struggles of the team in front of him. Give Allaire time to work his magic with both Jiggy and Monster - over the summer - and here's hoping we get average goaltending or better next year. If we do, that alone is probably enough to have us challenging for the playoffs.

  2. It's a good point, Junior, and thank you for the comment. I suppose I just had my hopes too high, when it came to Jiggy. I'm a firm believer in riding the hot goaltender and Gustavvson is clearly outplaying Giguere, at this point. I just wish Wilson would let him ride out the string. All I really want is to move up a couple of spots in the overall standings.
    Thanks again,
